The Department of Teacher Education offers several degree types to allow teachers or those that wish to become teachers to pursue a variety of graduate programs and types. It's part of the college's efforts to help Georgia teachers become more proficient as educators, counselors and leaders.
The program leading to a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Curriculum and Leadership is oriented toward promoting strong skills in assessment, research, pedagogy and content areas, leading to a high level of expertise. Students in the program also develop an in-depth understanding of educational psychology and how learning occurs.
The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree is designed for individuals holding a bachelor's degree in a subject area in which the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) issues a teaching certificate, or who have 25 or more semester hours in a closely related field but do not have teacher certification, who wish to obtain a teaching certificate and master's degree. Certification in this field is for grades Pre-K through 5, 4 through 8, 6 through 12, or Pre-K through 12 depending on the program. The M.A.T. provides professional and pedagogical studies that develop proficiency in the knowledge, skills, and habits of beginning teachers.
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree is designed for teachers who hold a clear renewable teaching certificate. It provides advanced professional and pedagogical studies that develop expertise in the knowledge, skills, and habits of accomplished teachers.
The Specialist in Education (Ed.S.) degree for educator preparation programs advances educators in their instructional and leadership skills beyond the master's level of competence. Teachers holding a clear renewable teaching certificate with at least three years of teaching experience may apply for admission to the Specialist in Education program. It is designed on an individual basis to complement your undergraduate and graduate preparation. The program consists of a balance of coursework in professional education and content, providing advanced professional and pedagogical studies that develop expertise and leadership in the knowledge, skills, and habits of accomplished teachers.
