Music Education: Master of Music (M.M.)

Program Description

This degree is designed to provide teachers of music with in-depth training and experience in one of three areas of concentration: Conducting (Wind Band or Choral), Pedagogy, or General. The program is accredited by both NASM and NCATE.

Admission Requirements

• Complete CSU Graduate School Online Application.
• Complete the CSU Schwob School of Music Online Application (Must have a minimum 2.75 Undergraduate GPA and conferred degree in Music to apply.)
• Take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) unless you have a clear, renewable teaching certificate in music from any U.S. State. If you do possess teacher certification, you are not required to take the GRE.   If you are required to take the GRE, the minimum score for graduate admission is 800. Have your scores reported to CSU (Code 001561)
• Set-up your audition and interview with the proper professor listed at http://music.columbusstate.edu/masters_music_ed.php.  It is suggested that you contact the primary professor before starting any of the process to make your interest known and to find out if any graduate positions will be available in their particular area.
• Have three letters of recommendation mailed to:

  The letters should all address your potential for success in a rigorous graduate program.
• Schedule graduate entrance exams by e-mailing Mrs. Tommey at stephens_debra@columbusstate.edu Candidates may take the four exams on any non-holiday weekday before the deadline dates listed below.  Each exam will take two hours to complete, and it is recommended that candidates take no more than two tests during a single day. Timeline

FALL: For full consideration to begin study in Fall term, all six steps above should be complete by March 15 – including acceptance into the CSU Graduate Program (from step 1).

SPRING: For full consideration to begin study in Spring term (not possible in some areas), all six steps above should be complete by November 15 – including acceptance into the CSU Graduate Program (from step 1).

Applicants may finish the process later than the suggested dates above, but may not receive full consideration due to limitations on assistantships and/or graduate student positions in a given area.

Online Options

A Summers Only Program is in development to allow working music teachers to obtain an MME while maintaining full time teaching positions. Students will be able to complete the degree in three (3) summer sessions.

Career Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the MM program, the candidate may apply to upgrade teacher certification to the T-5 level.

Requirements for Graduation

The MM program in music education is planned and delivered by the College of Arts in collaboration with the College of Education and Health Professions.  It is designed for those who currently hold a baccalaureate degree and teacher certification.  The program builds on this foundation of knowledge and provides greater breadth and depth in content and opportunities to develop a higher level of expertise in teaching.
